About this week's film:

Ixcanul

Country: Guatemala

🏆 Winner: Best Foreign Language Film (Academy Awards)

"Made with actual Mayan farmers in the Guatemalan highlands, this first feature has scenes of such tactile intimacy that the trust between the director and his mostly nonprofessional cast is unmistakable. Colors are rich and deep, and the atmosphere is so tranquil that the whoosh of action in the final third is powerfully disorienting." - The New York Times

A fascinating blend of modernity and ritual by Guatemalan director Jayro Bustamante. María, a seventeen-year-old Mayan girl, lives on the slopes of an active volcano in Guatemala. An arranged marriage awaits her, but her suitor must first spend several months working in the city. It is a world María knows nothing of, but is forced to grapple with when problems arise.

What People Have to Say

Since I discovered Battersea Spanish dance classes, my life has changed. All through lockdown and the stresses of work I have found the daily classes invigorating and life affirming. Not only is my body in a much better place, but so is my mental health. The lovely nature of all the teachers and engaging music and choreography makes it a wonderful thing to look forward to in the evening. I would recommend them to anyone.

I can't speak more highly of Battersea Spanish. I discovered it when I saw their Latin fitness classes advertised and was eager to get fit and tone up. I'm now doing one of their beginners' Spanish classes. You always get a warm welcome at Battersea Spanish whether it's from the teachers and bar staff, other students. It's a really cosy venue with a very supportive environment whether you're dancing or learning Spanish. The language courses are well structured and lots of fun - plenty of opportunities to practice Spanish outside of class too - games, books you can borrow, quiz and film nights, and conversation evenings. It's a place you can easily make new friends - people actually talk to each other and strike up conversations. For me it feels like a home from home.
