Come join us for a special Castanets Masterclass this Autumn with award-winning Flamenco and Castanets teacher and choreographer Lucia Caruso!

This workshop is suitable for all levels studied at Battersea Spanish, Beginner, Elementary and Improver.

Please note, you need to bring your own castanets to this workshop. Lucia will have a few spare sets of castanets, in the event that you forget yours.

Castanets, alongside the classical guitar, form the signature sound of Flamenco music and dance, and are an essential expression of Spanish folklore and culture.

The class will guide you step by step through the fundamentals of playing Castanets, focusing on correct hand placement, terminology, and basic exercises to build finger strength and rhythmic patterns that can be applied from basic to more advanced steps and footwork.

The class content will cover the playing of Castanets in Flamenco, Spanish Dance and Danza Estilizada.

What to expect from this workshop:

- Improved posture, focus, memory, motor coordination

- Enhanced mental agility

- Strengthened muscles in the arms and hands

- Improved socialisation

About Lucia:

Lucia Caruso is an accomplished Flamenco dance performer, award-winning choreographer, and experienced teacher, with a successful international career in Brazil, Italy, Cuba, Spain, and the UK. She has been based in London since 2005, when she began teaching Flamenco and Castanets at Danceworks and Kingston University. Well known in her genre, Lucia was invited to Strictly Come Dancing in November 2012 to bring passion to Fern Britton’s Paso Doble. In 2018 and 2019, she was also invited to teach at the Summer Intensive Workshops of the English National Ballet School.

Her constant professional development and artistic achievements have led her to embrace diversity, opening a new chapter in her career: working with community groups at the Claremont Project since 2014 and at Sadler’s Wells Theatre since 2017 as part of the Artistic Freelancers Community Engagement.

Combining her passion for Flamenco dance and Castanets with her dedication to teaching and her warm, supportive methodology, Lucia Caruso welcomes all who seek credibility, confidence, encouragement, and—above all—the discovery of their own potential. Her classes unveil a wealth of creativity, rhythm, grace, style, and strength, all rooted in the profound and authentic tradition of Spanish dance.

Before you book

What happens if I miss a lesson?

If you miss a class, we may be able to offer you a spot in another group at the same level, running that same week. This depends on availability and can’t always be guaranteed, but we’ll do our best!

How do I know which level is right for me?

Not sure of your level? Drop us an email if you're unsure.

What if I feel the level is too easy or difficult for me?

If, after the first lesson, you feel you need to move to a different level, get in touch and we'll see what we can do. Depending on availability, we might be able to move you to up or down a level. We can't guarantee that the group you move to will be on the same day of the week as your old group.

What happens if I can't attend the course after booking?

Once you have registered and the course has been confirmed, we are unable to offer refunds for non-participation or non-attendance, for any reason.

However, we require a minimum number of registrations to launch each course of Flamenco. Therefore, if we do not reach this minimum number shortly before the scheduled start date, the class will either be postponed (by up to two weeks), or will be cancelled (with a full refund offered). If another group is running at the same level but a different time, this will be offered to you.

What are the Terms and Conditions?

Please read our full Terms and Conditions to avoid any disappointment.
