Every year Battersea Spanish travels abroad with its students in a journey of culture and Spanish improvement. We have visited together places such as Madrid and Costa Rica, and 2017 will take us to Valencia, Spain’s third largest city, and home to incredible architecture, gorgeous beaches, and the eternally delicious paella!

Our whole approach to learning is personalised and tailored, so we can only take 20 people on board. If you want to experience an unforgettable weekend and further your Spanish in a hands-on and immersive way, book your seat today!

This trip is a unique opportunity to be introduced to Valencia by Nuria, our lovely Valenciana teacher, and also to really further your Spanish, regardless of the level; an element that one lacks when traveling independently.

The trip includes:

  •  a carefully crafted series of  preparatory materials and on-site activities that will allow learners of all levels to engage fully in Spanish while in Valencia.
  •  constant opportunities to put your Spanish into action in the real world, and learn lots of new vocabulary.
  •  an in depth look at one of Spain’s most iconic cities guided at all times by our very own teacher Nuria, proud Valenciana herself!
  •  accomodation in exclusive and top-rated bed and breakfast, full of beautiful personal touches and gorgeous Spanish terrace.
  •  locally sourced and organic delicious breakfast.
  •  immersion into the world of paella and the opportunity to cook it with local master chef!
  •  cultural and natural tours to appreciate the urban, classic and natural beauties of Valencia.
  •  a great weekend away bonding, learning and growing!

The hotel
We were looking for a special place, one that was clearly designed with love and taste, and we were very lucky to find Zalamera B&B. Zalamera is housed in a beautiful building with a façade from 1880, and has brand new rooms and facilities. The interior design combines art deco elements, natural materials and plants, creating a classy and homely feel. It is situated in the centre of Valencia, very easy to reach with a direct connection from Valencia airport, and a 3-minute walk from train and metro stations. Barrio del Carmen is a 1.2 miles walk, and the thriving district of Ruzafa, known as the foodies capital of Valencia, is just there! Visit their site and watch their video tour, and feel the love!

The itinerary
We have carefully designed a journey that will allow you to experience the absolute best of Valencia, while having an amazing time, and practicing español!

3pm: Kick off drinks in hotel and moment to meet, greet each other, and create the groups for Saturday’s Foodie Yincana!
4pm: Spanish guided tour of the historical centre of Valencia, stop at iconic establishment to enjoy the typical horchata and fartons, like a proper local.
7pm: return to the hotel.
8.30pm: Tapas in historic Barrio del Carmen.(*)

8-9am: desayuno
9-9:30am: Introduction by Spanish chef to the ingredients that make an authentic and phenomenal paella. We will hear about what goes into the millenary Paella Valenciana, how to distinguish the very best ingredients, where to buy them, and most important of all, how to get the best price!
9:30am: Beginning of the Foodies Yincana! Teams formed the day before go to the historical and impressive Mercado Central to put all that learning and Spanish in action!
11am: We reconvene at a secret location (your final clue!)
11am: Departure to privately hired masía (casa de campo) to enjoy a refreshment and decide who will be the winning team. The masía is a beautiful country house 20 minutes from the centre of Valencia where we will spend the afternoon eating, cooking, drinking and chatting, surrounded by naranjos (orange trees) and nature. This is exactly how Valencianos spend their weekend afternoons!

12-2pm: Preparation in groups of the típica Paella Valenciana (meat and veggie option), guided by the chef who led the morning talk.

2-6pm: Enjoyment of the succulent dish that you will have prepared with the ingredients you bought yourself in the market, while we enjoy live flamenco music, and the beautiful views and company.
6pm: Departure to La Albufera National Park to enjoy a stunning sunset while discovering Spain’s largest lake by boat.
7:00pm: Paseo en barca, sipping the wonderful views and enjoying the surrounding nature.
7:45pm: Return to the hotel.
10:00pm: Time to go out like a proper Spaniard for picoteo (if you’re still hungry!) and drinks exploring the trendy Ruzafa district and nightlife (*). If you are tired after a long day and prefer to rest, you can choose this instead.

8-10am: desayuno
10am: Bicycle tour (walking is an option if you prefer) by the Turia river bank, on our way to magnificent Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, designed by genius local architect Santiago Calatrava.
11am-12.30pm: mini picnic at Museo de las Artes y las Ciencias while we play our personally designed Valencia Pub Quiz!
12:30pm: Bicycle (or by taxi if you’re not biking) departure to Playa Malvarrosa, time for sand, sun and beach!
1-2.30pm: Ocean view restaurant to enjoy another delicious Valencian dish: fideuá, a sort of paella with a twist: noodles instead of rice!
2:30pm: stroll on the beach. Time to leave our mark and say bye bye to this wonderful experience.
3:30pm: return to the hotel (expect to be back by 4.30pm).
Time to go back to London, or stay a bit longer, exploring this beautiful city!

The learning materials and working with different levels of Spanish
Differentiated per level materials will be given to participants before and during the trip so that they can engage with the activities planned. At Battersea Spanish we are true believers of peer-learning, so participants of higher level can always aid the understanding of those with a lower level. In our previous trips we have had a very positive experience for everyone, working in this way. There will also be two bilingual Spanish native speakers at all times (Nuria and Sara) to help anyone with any vocabulary questions.

Flights and Insurance
Flights and insurance are not included in this trip, please make sure to make arrangements for both. In terms of flights, you can see the different options HERE.

Securing your seat
You can either pay for the deposit or book the whole trip. Please note that none of the payments are refundable, so make sure to check everything well before booking!

(*) These two meals are not included in the packs, but you can eat delicious tapas in Spain for as little as £10!

Spanish InstructorBrought up by a family of teachers in the charming and sunny region of Valencia in Spain, I have always found myself at home in the educational sphere. The inheritance of my parents’ teaching vocation and my passion for foreign languages and cultures has lead me to study a PhD in second language acquisition and Intercultural Education at the Universitat de València and the University of Roehampton. I feel very lucky to have been able to work doing what I love the most: teaching and instilling my love for languages. ¡Hasta pronto!
