Visual artist and flamenco dancer Carlos Otero invites you to explore with him and the models the topic of TONE and POSE. We will employ only pencil and charcoal to explore tone and its effects on volume and space. In this session the poses will be mainly static and arranged with high contrast flamenco themed clothing and accessories.

The session will include:

1. Fast sketching exercises with a series of short poses to practice and revise composition techniques.
2. TONE. Identifying the contrast of tones on the figure and background and reflecting it on paper. We will have 2 half hour poses to experiment with tonal qualities.
3. LONG POSE (1 hr) to practice all techniques and combine composition and tonal skills.

At the end of the session we will share and enjoy the work we have created.

Battersea Spanish will provide basic materials, but please feel free to bring your own. Remember as well there is a tasty glass of wine included in the price!

The event will be conducted in English so everyone is welcome to join. We welcome participants who are experienced, and also new to the field. This is an exclusive arrangement with limited capacity, please book now to avoid disappointment.

And if you are a Battersea Spanish member, remember to use your special members discount!

Frequently Asked Questions

Juan Carlos Otero

Flamenco Artist

I graduated in 1994 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, producing painting, conceptual video, sound and performance. I continued developing conceptual work in design, and worked extensively in education but my main artistic output for the past two decades has been as a flamenco dancer and choreographer. Since 2013 I have also been devising multi disciplined experimental theatre. My practice has evolved around the dichotomies of my dual nationality/ cultural identity and the split between my background in traditional culture and my education in contemporary art. For years now I have been trying to create projects that unify my various creative strands. FLAMENCO LIFE DRAWING with Battersea Spanish is the latest venture, fusing my two main areas of expertise, Fine Art and Flamenco.
