This event is exclusively for Spanish speakers or Spanish learners with at least a high A1 level (Beginner 3)
Frida Kahlo, revolutionary, feminist, and fashion icon, is probably the best know Mexican female painter in the world. Kahlo’s work has been celebrated internationally as emblematic of Mexican national and indigenous traditions, and by feminists for what is seen as its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.
Her image has become ubiquitous in contemporary culture, linking her with women empowerment, ethnic pride, and bold style. In 1937 her striking portrait appeared in American Vogue and her heritage is now stronger than ever. This summer her distinct wardrobe will be seen outside Mexico for the first time as part of Frida Kahlo: Making Herself Up, a major V&A exhibition about the most iconic female artist in history. She is the muse for several designers this spring, including Roland Mouret and the New York label Cushnie et Ochs. To mark International Women’s Day, Mattel released a Frida Barbie, one of a new collection depicting inspirational women.
Battersea Spanish has organised a fantastic day in honour of this amazing woman! A selected group of students will go to the exhibition along with teachers Edoardo and Irene. Edoardo is our beloved Mexican teacher and an artist himself; and Irene is our Spanish teacher who is also an art historian, so imposible to beat this combination of guides! Preparatory materials will be sent in advance to students coming so they can engage fully in the guided tour, that will be in Spanish. All levels are welcome, as materials will be adapted, as well as the talk.
After the exhibition, we will go to Hyde Park, for a bring-your-own Mexican picnic! If it rains (it is London, after all) we will contact you with an alternative to Hyde Park.
This is a unique day of Spanish immersion, with 6 hours of exposure and practice to the language. Only a very small number of students can join (due to exhibition’s popularity), so please please book now!
The price of the event includes:
– preparatory materials sent prior to the museum visit
– the entrance to the exhibition
– a level- specific guided tour by our expert teachers
– hours of Spanish speaking practice at the picnic!
